REMOTORING
The properties of motors should be thoroughly understood to avoid some chronic misconceptions. Before deciding to remotor, it is wise to know what you have and what improvements are available for replacement. A thorough ANALYSIS OF MOTOR PERFORMANCE is required to avoid disappointment and wasted time, effort and money. Each motor has its pros and cons, dependent on application. Is it worth performing major surgery on a loco, destroying the original mount, only to find nothing was gained or that things are worse ?
PHYSICS | MECHANICS FORCE | ENERGY or WORK | Torque
A short discussion of some basic physics may help explain other discussions or just confuse them more. With a degree in years of experience as an Automation Engineer, sometimes I overlook the fact that not everyone has a background to understand all the math and jargon. An attempt to clear things a bit is presented.
DYNAMOMETER
There is much hype on the quality of new motors used in expensive locomotives, but very little data on their true performance or ratings.
Used to measure the output of a prime mover (motor or engine), an electric motor dynamometer consists of three parts: a brake to measure torque applied as a resisting force to the shaft, a tachometer to measure RPM and an ammeter to measure current.
Torque wrench for spark plugs ?
Is a torque wrench necessary for replacing spark plugs ?
A mechanic can put alot together without a torque wrench, it comes with experience. Mechanics sees plenty of screwed up spark plugs and threads by amateurs, and if you don’t have more than five years experience, I suggest to use the torque wrench and do the job.
The plug needs to be tightened to the correct specification. If [..]
Using Torque Wrenches
Most torque wrenches are required to be set at “0”when not in use to maintain calibration.
Please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for further information on use and maintenance.
Setting Torque Value on a Dial Indicator Wrench:
1. Make sure your indicator needle is set to “0” [..].
Torque Arm | What is it | Who did you find it ?
Torque arm is the distance from the center of the axis to the point of the applied force.
It’s expressed in either in foot or inch pounds, in the imperial system.
The torque arm is often referred as force arm, lever arm, or moment arm.
In a lever, the moment (torque) arm of the force is often referred to as the force arm and that of the resistance is referred [..]
