Plasma and LCD? Were. The future is seen in the OLED technology
Currently almost a necessity in every living room, LCD televisions and plasma could be soon take the path that cathode tube tv’s have already taken. According to manufacturers, a new generation of super-slim screens will revolutionize the home entertainement.
OLED technology (Organic light-emitting diode) build the most thin-screen TV ever created. In the most narrow point of the tv, the screen has a thickness of a coin. In addition, technological advances make the image to be displayed more clearly than the display’s of LCD or plasma.
The OLED TV have a contrast rate of one million to 1, approximately ten times more than most LCD screens. The first device, for public (large consumption) was Bravia XELfrom Sony, with a diagonal of 28 cm and a price around 4000 euros.

Also, other companies producing consumer electronics and IT, among which are Panasonic and Apple, plans in the near future, empowering their mp3 players, computers and portable devices with screens with OLED technology.

OLED Structures
OLED display technology is based on organic materials that emit light naturally, when an electrical load passes through them, instead of being illuminated by a separate source, as it happens in case plasma or LCD tvs. This leads to a saving of space and a decrease up to 40% of energy consumption.

A drawback of the technology is its life. An OLED screen is guaranteed for 30,000 hours of operation, approximately ten years in case of use of the eight hours a day. By comparison, an LCD television has a life expectancy of two times higher.
Manufacturers expected that OLED televisions will become prevalent in the market since 2012, when cheaper models will be available in stores in time for World Cup Football.
