Maintaining handheld device security requires constant effort, sufficient resources, and vigilance from an organization. Maintaining the security of a handheld (A computerised device designed to be carried around in the hand for mobile use) device usually involves the following steps:
- Maintaining physical control of the device
- Employing content encryption,user authentication and other available security facilities
- Reducing exposure of sensitive data
- Enabling wireless interfaces only when needed
- Recognizing and avoiding actions that are questionable
- Deactivating compromised devices
- Minimizing functionality
- Employing malware detection and prevention software.
- Backing up data frequently
- Test and apply critical patches and updates in a timely manner
- Enable, obtain, and analyze device log files for compliance
- Evaluate device security periodically.
- Establish and follow procedures for recovering from compromise
