Use WinAmp with Your iPod
I’m not a fan of iTunes, my favorite music player is Winamp and video player is Media Player Classic. WinAmp is found on the hard disks of millions of happy users. After a decade of playing music, the “skinnable” WinAmp has several versions, including one with full CD ripping and burning, but personal I prefer the old versions of WinAmp , without all the new functions, just the music player.
On July 17, 2002 when Apple introduced the first iPod for Windows there was no iTunes for Windows. Instead, Apple worked with Musicmatch Inc, to make MusicMatch Jukebox the official iPod software for Windows. With the introduction of iTunes for Windows on October 16, 2003 they stopped bundling the Musicmatch software.
Although that designation ended you’re still free to use MusicMatch with your iPod.
As of Musicmatch 10.1, Yahoo! branding was incorporated. The former logo has been replaced by a pure Yahoo! purple logo, and the Y! Music logo replaces the location of the Musicmatch logo elsewhere in the product. The Music Store now uses Yahoo! IDs for authentication. Version 10.1 of the Jukebox is no longer available on the Musicmatch website, however, older versions can be downloaded from: http://www.oldapps.com/MusicMatch_Jukebox.htm.
But like I said I’m a fan of Winamp like others millions of users, however, we have not been so lucky until 2004. In February 2004, Christophe Thibault released iPod Support Plug-in for WinAmp. It allows you to manage your iPod from within the winamp media library. It supports all kinds of iPods, from the classic first generation iPods, to the iPod mini, photo, nano and shuffle and everything in between.
The last iPod Plugin version (at the time of writing) is 3.08 released on 01/11/2009.The new features are:
- support for iTouch with FW 2.x (experimental) without patching device. This is not yet compatible to iTunes, so don’t try it if you still want to use iTunes for your device!!!
- iPhone/iTouch shows “sync in progress”, no need to run AfterSync or reboot after transfer
- automatically launch ‘aftereject.cmd’ after any device eject, if it exists. aftereject.cmd must be in …\Winamp\plugins\ml_ipod folder and is optional
- a lot of bug fixes and minor improvements
But wait, one more good news, a new style of iPod support called pmp_ipod is built into Winamp version 5.2 and above (and was developed by the former lead developer of ml_ipod). ml_ipod is therefore offered as an alternative for those who find the inbuilt iPod support lacking in features.
