Free antivirus from Microsoft

Microsoft will launch a free antivirus for PCs – code named Morro – which will be available on the company website. The product, which is found in beta and will compete with products
sold by Symantec and McAfee.

A Microsoft representative announced Wednesday that the software manufacturer is preparing to launch a antivirus, in beta, which can be downloaded free from the company website. Microsoft has stated that the product is still in testing stage and refused to give an exact date for release, stating only that it will take place “soon”.

In November last year, the company notified the public about the plans to replace the software security Windows Live OneCare with a product that is available free to users. Shares of two major producers of software for data security – Symantec and McAfee – have sudden decrease after Microsoft has submitted plans for developing an antivirus that will be provide for free.

The new security software will include only basic features necessary for the fight against viruses and is comparable to the cheapest products sold by Symantec and McAfee.

Amy Barzdukas responsible for product management at Microsoft, noted that Morro will run, most likely, the anti-malware engine of Windows OneCare, but that will use the resources of the system – so there will be placed in the operating system.

The company hopes that Morro will encourage more people to use the antivirus protection – currently about 50% of Windows users do not have an antivirus installed on their computer.
