Torque Arm | What is it | Who did you find it ?
Torque arm is the distance from the center of the axis to the point of the applied force.
It’s expressed in either in foot or inch pounds, in the imperial system.
The torque arm is often referred as force arm, lever arm, or moment arm.
In a lever, the moment (torque) arm of the force is often referred to as the force arm and that of the resistance is referred to as the resistance arm.
Also if we referring to vehicles a torque arm can be an aluminum brace that installs between the engine and transmission.
For example on Harley-Davidson Evolution Big Twins the torque arm connects an Evo’s transmission to the right side of its engine.
The transmission is not only connected by mounting bosses in the center and the inner primary case on the left, but also by the torque arm on the right.
The torque arm is fabricated from billet aluminumand comes slathered in flawless chrome.
Do you need a torque arm on Harley-Davidson Evolution Big Twins? Depends, if you bought a scooter to build and ride, the torque arm should definitely be on your list, if not its benefits will not be noticed as much as the hole in your wallet.
On a MACK truck the torque arms is found on each rear axle just off center running from the housing to the frame.
They keep the whole rear end from turning when you put the truck in gear and start moving.
On a 82-92 gm f-bodys it is a rear suspension component. It keeps you from ripping the rear end out and keeps your pinion angle correct.
Also on a Pontiac Firebird V6.the torque arms is a important part of the suspensions.
On Camaro the torque arm is de-coupled so we could use the shortest possible beam for acceleration, thus providing maximum anti-squat and traction. The problem that arises with using a short torque arm is the increase in rear wheel hop under braking. Camaro torque arm solves this problem by de-coupling under braking.
The rear brake torque is reacted by a sliding link. The “torque arm” that results from this arrangement is almost twice as long as the stock unit.
