Lug Nut Torque
How to maintain proper lug nut torque ?
- Check torque before every trip
- Use proper tools
- Follow the appropriate star pattern sequence
- Torque lug nuts in the correct stages and follow-up intervals after any wheel reinstallation
Remember, torque is the amount of rotating force applied to a fastener, such as a lug nut. Proper torque of lug nuts can only be achieved by using a torque wrench and a socket.
The reason to torque lug nuts is more than to just get them tight. The torque ring of the wheel is the raised ring just outside of the lugholes on the back of the wheel. It acts as a lock washer. The lug nuts must be set to the correct torque for the torque ring to work properly.
Lug Nut/Bolt Torque Recommendations
Stud / Bolt Size Torque Recommendation
3/8″ (fine) 35-45 ft-lbs
7/16″ – 18 (fine) 50-60 ft-lbs
12mm – 1.5 (fine) 70-80 ft-lbs
1/2″ – 20 (fine) 80-90 ft-lbs
5/8″ – 18 (fine) 110-125 ft-lbs
How do you remove a stripped lug nut from the stud ?
Check at the local parts house for either a ‘freeze’ kit (pressurized refrigerant) that’ll freeze the stud so it can be broken off w/a hammer or a twistout or equal lugnut set.
5/8″ – 13 (coarse) 110-125 ft-lbs
How to repair broken lug nut stud ?
First we need a new lug nut stud, can get them from most autoparts stores. Then we have to take the wheel off where the broken stud is at.
Then we hammer the old stud out, like hammering in a nail, and it will pop out the back side of the hubs flange. Then we insert the new stud on the back side, so the threads go through the flange, pointing out toward us.
In the next step we use an impact wrench(air powered), put a fat washer onto that stud, and then put the lug nut on and impact the lug nut down, and we watch it draw in the stud from the back side, till its mated against the hub flange.
