Plug-in Connector Assembled without the Aid of a Torque Wrench

The first plug-in connector that can easily be assembled with a defined torque without the aid of a torque wrench is the Turck’s new M12Nm connector .
The integrated torque control guarantees an IP67 connection. The M12Nm connector was developed by Escha, a connector specialist at Turck Group.

Until now, a torque wrench has been the only way to ensure a plug-in connector was tightened with the correct torque for the O-ring’s required compression. Since handling such a tool is oftentimes quite cumbersome in practice, many plug-in connectors are not adequately tightened – or are too vigorously.
Both scenarios result in leaky connections, and tightening the connector too vigorously can damage or destroy the O-ring.

The connector’s functional principle is similar to a gas cap: First of all, the user joins the pin terminal and the half-coupling via an axial movement.
Then, the user can easily tighten the lock bush by hand. When the defined torque is reached, the lock bush disengages.
The user gets a clear sensible and acoustic feedback to make sure the connection is tight and further compression is prevented.

Connectors are available whose O-ring cannot be damaged or destroyed when being overstressed, but these require the aid of a torque wrench to guarantee a safely tightened connection.

Male and female M12Nm connectors are available in 3, 4 and 5 pin versions in straight or angled designs as of the 2nd quarter of 2009. The complete product range meets the requirements of protection class IP67.

Also Turck has extended its cable range for its BIM-UNT sensor family for position detection in pneumatic cylinders. In addition to the standard PUR cable which is particularly suitable for applications with E-chains and which is resistant to oils and cooling lubricants, Turck also offers a heat-resistant as well as a food safe and chemically resistant cable for the sensors.
