Adjust torque wrench

Which torque wrench?

First you need to choose a torque wrench suitable for your needs. Let’s take a bike for example and we need to adjust my drive chain.
We can choose a cheap torque wrench like Halfords, that have a good quality and are accurate enough for most jobs.

We will also need a socket to fit each of the jobs, they are interchangeable with some socket sets but only for the larger 1/2 inch drives.
They come in a variety of ranges of torque so we need to check the manual to make sure the ones we need are covered by the range.

We will use it for retightening the axle nut after we have adjusted the chain, but in general those guidemarks are not always the most accurate, it is worth using two parallel planks to make sure the axle is at a rightangle to the bike.

How to adjust a torque wrench ?

In general at the top of the sliding scale (towards the middle of the wrench) there should be a lock ring that generally turns to the right to release and left to lock. We need to release the ring, to turn our base handle to the desired setting, lock the ring. Sometimes the lock rings get stuck, and we may have to use a pair of pliers.

Adjusting torque wrench – Patent

An improved adjusting torque wrench includes an adjusting screw that is utilized for the purpose of changing the torque setting of the wrench. The screw has a radial flange thereon having a plurality of circumferentially spaced notches in the outer periphery of the flange. The adjusting screw is fixed to the grip member and rotatable therewith relative to an adjusting nut that is fixed in the lever arm of the wrench.

A detent that is movable into and out of the recesses in the adjusting screw is slidably carried by the lever arm so that when engaged in the recesses, the detent prevents relative rotation between the grip member and the lever arm, and thus prevents adjustment of the torque. Also, the detent extends exteriorly of the gripping member so that it can be grasped by the operator of the wrench and moved out of the recesses so that the wrench can be easily adjusted to a new torque setting.
