Metrification is important because nearly all world trade involves metric goods.
The metric system, in itself, is much easier to use than the traditional system, because you don't have to remember all the different conversions (16 ounces in a pound, 12 inches in a foot, and so on). You only have to remember a short list of prefixes that represent powers of ten: there are 1000 milligrams in a gram, 1000 grams in a kilogram, and so on, and the same prefixes work for all units.
